Bargello Tree Skirt

This is a great project to get your first steps into the Bargello technique.  Select six fabrics and grab the 10-degree wedge ruler from our shelf. Kelly Davis will help you get organized and stay on task during this class.  Intermediate to advanced skills required.

Supply List for Bargello Tree Skirts (this yardage will make two skirts, if you cut carefully)
18 fabrics - 3/8 yard each in your favorite colors. Keep in mind the swirl effect of the skirt while choosing so that fabrics will bleed or show sharp contrast when piecing to enhance the swirl effect.
Phillips Fiber Arts 10 degree wedge ruler
6 x 24” rotary cutting ruler
Sewing machine in good working order with power cord and foot pedal
Sewing supplies (pins, scissors, snips, rotary cutter and ruler, thread)
Marker
Painters tape or pieces of paper for marking and organizing wedges
1 yard fabric for bias binding
60” x 60” of backing and batting for each skirt

Homework before Class starts
To take full advantage of the class, you should have all of your strips cut and strip sets sewn together before class. This does take some time to do, so please be sure that you take the time to do it. If you are unable to complete all of them before class, please be sure to have at least one set done before your arrival. Please read the instructions followed here, completely before starting to cut and sew.

1. Place each of the fabrics in a pleasing order and number all from 1-18, remembering the swirl effect we are looking for.
2. From each 3/8 yard fabric, cut 6, 1 3/4” WOF (width of fabric) strips. Do NOT remove selvages
3. Arrange each strip into groups of 6, with one of each fabric in numerical order. You should have 6 sets with 18 fabrics. If you do not like the order they are in, now is the time to rearrange and renumber them in order from 1-18. All Strip sets should be identical.
4. Matching selvage ends, sew strips together, down the long side, using a strict 1/4” seam allowance. ***Please note, all of your fabrics may not be the same width due to manufacturers' differences. Please sew your strips so that the actual fabric (just inside the selvage), matches as closely as possible at the same end of the strip set, to allow for the most available usage of fabric. It is ok if fabrics don’t line up at the other end, but try to make them line up as closely as possible.
5. Sew fabrics in order from 1-18. Sew in pairs first. For example: 1+2, 3+4, 5+6, 7+8 up to 17+18. Press each pair's seam allowance to one side as you sew them. Set seam with iron, Finger press seam to one side, then press with iron, being sure to keep seam line straight. Sewing and pressing this way will help to prevent curvature of the strip set. DO NOT sew all strips together and then press!!! Press as you go!! Continue piecing strips into pairs until all 18 strips are sewn together. Press seams for each pair before adding the next pair. (ie: 1/2 +3/4, 5/6+ 7/8 etc. Sew all 6 strip sets, using this method.
